A safe, stable and draining surface using Nidaplast honeycomb structures
To build a playground compliant with safety standards, Nidaplast honeycomb panels were installed beneath the synthetic turf and shock-absorbing layers.
This solution ensures long-term stabilisation, efficient drainage and improved impact absorption — all essential for the safety of young users.
Project Context and Challenges
Strict requirements to ensure safety and comfort
Playground surfaces must comply with stringent regulations concerning:
- ground stabilisation,
- shock absorption (critical fall height),
- vertical and horizontal drainage,
- resistance to intensive use,
- accessibility for PRM (persons with reduced mobility).
Traditional structures often rely on thick layers of compacted aggregates combined with multiple shock-absorbing layers.
These solutions can be heavy, complex to install and less durable in wet environments.
Integrating Nidaplast honeycomb structures provides an efficient and durable response to these constraints.
Objectives Defined by the Project Owner
The specifications required a solution that would:
- improve synthetic turf stability,
- offer shock absorption performance compliant with fall-height standards,
- ensure rapid water evacuation to prevent puddles and slipping,
- reduce the thickness of aggregate layers,
- simplify maintenance and extend the service life of the installation.
Solution Implemented with Nidaplast
Nidagreen honeycomb panels: high-performance stabilisation & drainage
The Nidagreen polypropylene honeycomb panels were installed within the sub-structure beneath the final surface.
These panels provide:
- soil stabilisation,
- load distribution,
- rapid water percolation,
- a significant reduction in heavy aggregate layers.
Advantages in this context:
- Lightweight, easy to handle, fast installation — no need for heavy machinery
- Excellent vertical drainage capacity
- Reduced risk of settlement
- Improved safety thanks to better impact absorption
- Durable solution with strong moisture resistance

Nidagreen
Nidagreen is an extruded polypropylene panel, covered on both sides with a non-woven geotextile (PET 25 g/m²). The honeycomb panel is specifically designed to be installed between the synthetic surface layer and the ground (synthetic turf, shock-absorbing poured layers, resin-bound gravel, etc.).

1. Sub-base preparation
Installation of a draining bedding layer or lightweight aggregate layer.
2. Installing Nidagreen panels
Installation of Nidagreen honeycomb panels according to the layout, in a staggered pattern.
Panels are connected using permeable tape.
Panels can be easily cut using a circular saw or even a utility knife.
3. Pouring and finishing
Installation of shock-absorbing underlayers.
Application of the final surface (resin-bound coating).
Drainage levels and functional performance of the play area are checked.
